AHIMA's Human Anatomy and Physiology is a non-credit, self-paced, Internet-based course, authored by Richard Moutvic, M.D., covering all the basic information necessary for a general understanding of the structure and function of the human body. The topics that are covered include organization of the body, chemistry of life, body tissues, cells and membranes, blood, and human development and birth. The body systems to be covered include integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, lymphatic, sensory, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive. Passing this course with a grade of "C" or better satisfies the prerequisite requirement for the Coding Basics program.
There are no prerequisites. You will need to have the required books (listed below), so you should order them before registering, because once you register, the course begins immediately. Allow a few weeks for the order to be processed and shipped, otherwise you will have to pay the extra charges required to speed up delivery. Books This two-book package can be purchased directly from AHIMA using the Anatomy
and Physiology Book Order Form. You do not have to purchase the books from AHIMA. However, if you buy them somewhere else, you must be sure to purchase books with the exact ISBN numbers listed above. Technology Coding Basics requires the use of the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, RealPlayer,
and Macromedia Flash plug-ins. The Anatomy and Physiology final must be taken under the supervision of a proctor. This means you must ask a manager, supervisor, human resources personnel, or HIM coworker to be in the same room with you as you complete your exam. If you are taking the courses outside of work, you may ask a friend to be your proctor. Spouses or family members cannot be proctors. Detailed proctoring instructions and forms can be viewed here:
Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view and print the three documents
above. Be sure you have the latest version of this free software. Membership Students enrolled in this Anatomy and Physiology course cannot apply for AHIMA student membership. Only students who have registered and paid for both this course and Coding Basics, which is a full coding program approved by AHIMA, are eligible for student membership. Credits This course is not eligible for any AHIMA CEUs. It has not been reviewed or recommended by American Council and Education (ACE) for college credit. Course Begins Students who pay for the course by credit card will be able to access the course as soon as they are registered. If you don't want to start the same day you register, e-mail distance.education@ahima.org immediately after paying for the course. Address your request to "Anatomy Course Administrator" and be sure to include your first and last names, ID number, and the official date you want to start. (Note: we can only adjust the start date if we receive your e-mail immediately following online registration. Please do not send us a request for a delayed start after you've opened the course and looked at it.) Students who pay by check or purchase order will be given access as
soon as we have received and processed payment. As soon as the processing
is complete, we will send you an e-mail to let you know that the course
is available to you. Course Length and Repeat Registrations This is a self-paced, online course and students are allowed a maximum of 15 weeks to complete the lessons and assessments. Students may complete the course in less than 15 weeks, depending on individual motivation, time available to commit to the course, and other factors. Following are some general guidelines:
Students who do not successfully complete the coursework in the allowed 15 weeks may opt to repeat the course. To repeat the course, a student should simply go through the online registration process again. (Students re-taking the course are required to pay whatever price is listed at the time of re-registration.) Follow the general registration instructions given on the > Orientation page of this website. Registration |
