 ICD-10 Overview: Mortality Reporting

This is a self-paced, four-week online course. It is for coders, educators and others interested in learning about the worldwide statistical uses of ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision), a classification owned and published by the World Health Organization (WHO). Effective with deaths occurring in 1999, the U.S. began using ICD-10 to code and classify mortality data from death certificates. While this implementation was a multifaceted task, it was recognized as important to ensure the international comparability of health statistics.

The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with ICD-10, its organization, structure, and coding guidelines, the professionals who assign ICD-10 codes, and how the coded information is used at national and international levels.

Another AHIMA course, ICD-10-CM Overview: Deciphering the Code, focuses on the related classification which is currently under development: International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification. The ICD-10-CM will be based on the ICD-10 but will provide for additional morbidity detail and will be updated annually.
