In response to industry demands for HIPAA Privacy and Security Training, AHIMA has developed a comprehensive online program. The Privacy and Security Program will prepare participants to assume roles of greater responsibility or enhance current job skills by exploring professional practice issues above and beyond the basic HIPAA curriculum or available job experience for the candidates. The Program now includes
four courses. (The fourth web-based
course was added in July, 2006, with a corresponding registration fee
change.) Click
the links below for details.

Prerequisites (Suggested, Not Required)
Classes Begin The four Privacy courses are made available to program registrants as soon as payment is received and processed by AHIMA. If you pay online with a credit card, you will have immediate access to the courses. However, students who register for the HIPAA Security course separately from the rest of the program will need to wait up to two business days for their course to be activated – while we verify that they participated in the program in the past. Course Length Courses will be available to each student for a total of 26 weeks following activation (except for students who register in HIPAA Security Course only, which gets 6 weeks of access). However, we recommend that the total time a student takes to complete all four courses should not exceed 20 weeks. Credit and Certificate of Completion A total of 20 CE units are awarded for successfully completing all four courses. Students who register for the HIPAA Security Course only will receive 4 CEUs. See individual course outlines above for CE units awarded per course. Certificates of Completion for each course are provided online, after successful course completion. It is important to note the difference between certificate and certification. A certificate is received after a predetermined course of study, whereas certification is an exam or credential that needs to be maintained with continuing education. The Privacy and Security program is neither a prerequisite for the Certified in Healthcare Privacy (CHP®) certification exam, nor does completion of the program automatically qualify candidates for the certification exam. Please carefully review the CHP Candidate Handbook to determine eligibility for the CHP certification exam.
